The quote
shown above is so true for patient's that suffer from Alzheimer's
disease, dementia or other memory impairments. The window of
opportunity to preserve memories after diagnosis is often limited.
Scrapbooking, preserving memories and documenting family history are
wonderful ways of not only providing cognitive stimulation to the
Alzheimer's/dementia patient, but the steps taken to create a memory
book have been shown to be therapeutic for both patients and caregivers.
ElderCare Resource Center has partnered
with scrapbook and digital design artists to provide you with easy and
cost effective ways of scrapbooking and preserving memories. Over the
next few months we will be offering pre-made scrapbook pages, scrapbook
albums, memory books, digital scrapbook pages and custom framing
products that have all been selected or designed specifically for
Alzheimer's patients and their families.

West Palm
Beach, Florida
I remember back in 2003 watching
CBS News and a great interview that Mike Wallace did with our former
first lady Nancy Regan. They were talking about Alzheimer's
disease and "the long good-bye". Having worked for so many
years in this field, I listened with half an ear and was stunned when I
heard her say something that I never really gave much thought to. She
said that, “The golden years are when you can sit back,
hopefully, and exchange memories. And that's the worst part about this
disease. There's nobody to exchange the memories with.” She had
tears in her eyes and went on to explain how this aspect of the disease
was particularly hard on her. Today, I replayed the video and found that
I am just as moved as I was the first time I watched it four years ago
when we started The Scrapbook Circle.
This year we are rededicating ourselves to helping
caregivers who have been forced to become the memories for their loved
ones. We will be offering both fun and therapeutic classes that not only
benefit the caregivers, but that enhance the well-being of the patient.
For caregivers who can not join us we will be
offering special scrapbook kits, supplies, and instructions via our
website.
Statistics show that Scrapbooking may help to:
- Stimulate mental activity
- Decrease isolation and
facilitate interaction between people with Alzheimer’s disease and
their caregivers
- Give people with
Alzheimer’s disease a sense of belonging by drawing on pleasant
memories of family and friends
- Link younger family
members, such as grandchildren, with family history
- Lead to a discussion about
people and events included in the scrapbook, which may be enjoyable
for people with Alzheimer's disease
- Give people with
Alzheimer's disease a sense of achievement and help take away the
feeling that they are a burden
- Encourage communication
