Return to Alzheimer's Links and Resources Support Groups Monthly Caregiver's Support Groups The Alzheimer’s caregiver’s support group meetings offer an opportunity for caregivers to meet others who are facing similar challenges and to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and effective coping strategies. The Adult Children Support Group is designed specifically to meet the needs of adults who have a parent with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder. The focus of this group is on issues, concerns, and questions adult children face as they provide care to a parent with memory loss or as they strive to learn more about memory impairment. The Nursing Home/Assisted Living Issues Support Group is a discussion group focusing on the needs of family members of nursing home or assisted living facility residents. Topics of discussion include the care plan process, how to be active in your loved one’s care, state and federal regulations governing nursing homes and assisted living facilities, how to resolve concerns and communicate with facility staff, and how to make your visits more meaningful. This group is a closed meeting for family members only. Early-Stage Alzheimer’s Support Group The ElderCare Resource Center offers a support group designed for individuals who have early-stage dementia and are seeking information and support. This group includes discussion on topics such as questions and concerns about memory loss, coping with changes and feelings related to memory loss, adjusting to new situations, wellness, and support systems. This group of six to ten individuals meets twice per month for a four-month period. A concurrent group is offered at the same location for the caregivers or spouses of these individuals. Interested participants must be interviewed prior to the first group session to determine whether or not this type of group is right for them. Teen Support Group ElderCare Resource Center is pleased to provide assistance and support to families affected by memory impairment. Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of memory impairment affect not only the patient, but also his/her family members. This includes individuals of all ages. In an effort to meet the needs of the entire family, the ElderCare Resource Center has developed a program for teens. Our teen support program offers an opportunity for teens that have a grandparent or parent with memory impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease or multi-infarct dementia, to learn more about these illnesses and ways to cope with the changes in their family members. This support group, focuses on issues, concerns, and questions teens face as their families cope with changes in a family member affected by memory impairment like Alzheimer’s disease. Topics addressed at these meetings will include: 1) info on memory loss; 2) how to communicate with a memory-impaired person; 3) discussion about feelings related to having a family member with memory loss; and 4) activity ideas for visiting a memory-impaired person. |
